Federico Faggin's Signature in the Production 4004
Each 4004 ever produced is etched with the initials of its designer, F.F. for Federico Faggin.

The signature is visible directly across from the Intel logo. The Intel logo has the copyright symbol and the date '71. Faggin created the design and led the design development of the 4004 and its companion chips from inception to production.

Faggin also christened the chips with distinct names: 4001, 4002, 4003 and 4004, breaking away from the numbering scheme used by Intel at that time. Federico Faggin's Signature in the Pre-Production 4004
In the pre-production 4004, Federico Faggin placed his initials inside the 4004. A few months later he moved his signature to the border of the chip because he needed to use the area where the signature was to add additional circuits. The pre-production mask can be recognized because the F.F. is missing from the border across the Intel logo, and the logo is without the copyright symbol and the date '71.
